Learn about varicose veins, their causes, symptoms, and treatments. Improve circulation and leg health with expert care from Dr. Rishi Panchal in Palm Beach.
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that develop when the valves within the veins cannot function properly, resulting in poor blood circulation. These veins often look dark blue or purple, and mainly affect the lower body- the legs and feet. This is a common condition many experience, especially as they grow older. Varicose veins are not usually harmful and many times can be viewed as just a cosmetic issue, but they can show underlying circulatory issues that may need to be addressed. For this very reason, it is important to understand what varicose veins are, and how to treat them.
Healthy valves in our veins move the blood in one direction, but when those valves weaken, blood can move the opposite way and begin to pool in the veins resulting in Varicose Veins. Things that add additional pressure on the veins like obesity, and prolonged sitting/ standing can also increase the chances of developing varicose veins. Additionally, other uncontrollable factors, such as genetics, and hormonal changes can lead to varicose veins. With a family history of varicose veins comes an increased risk for you to also develop them. Women are also more likely to develop varicose veins when hormonal changes related to pregnancy, menstruation or menopause occur. Last, but definitely not least, one of the biggest causes of varicose veins is age. As we age, our veins lose elasticity, increasing the chance of them becoming varicose.
Symptoms of varicose veins differ greatly in severity. Many common symptoms are visible dark veins that can be seen just beneath the skin, an aching feeling or sensation of heaviness in the legs, the swelling of feet and ankles after long periods of sitting/ standing, or even itchiness/ burning around the affected area. In more extreme situations, the skin near the affected veins can even become discolored/ develop ulcers.
Hormonal treatments, prolonged hours of standing, and a history of blood clots are some of the most common risk factors. These all can increase the likelihood of developing varicose veins.
If you’re dealing with varicose veins, there are several treatment options available. Engaging in physical activity, managing your weight and elevating your legs can all promote better circulation, reduce pressure on your veins, and decrease swelling and discomfort. Wearing compression stockings is another great way to improve blood flow and alleviate symptoms. That being said, sometimes, these minor adjustments aren’t enough and medical help is needed. Procedures such as a Microphlebectomy, Radiofrequency Ablation, and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy are all great ways to treat Varicose Veins.
